It’s so easy to maintain velvet furniture. And how comfortable ours has been this year. Learn how to maintain velvet furniture, and what the pros and cons are to having it in your house.

What is velvet?

Velvet is not a type of fabric (synthetic, silk, etc.) but a weave. The unique manufacturing process creates the dense, short pile it is known for. My Meredith Sofa and Manhattan Dining Chairs are both synthetic. This makes them much easier to maintain than natural fibers.

We added four modern velvet dining chairs (the Manhattan Dining Chairs), to our breakfast nook. Then, this fall, we added a beautiful velvet sofa (the Meredith Velvet Sofa), to our living room. I have always loved velvet’s look and feel, but it has been difficult to incorporate into our home due to my 3 young children and my haphazard housekeeping skills.

These velvet pieces have performed well in my home and I am very pleased with their ease of cleaning and care. It’s amazing that my favorite fabric can be used in our hectic home. You can read more about velvet furniture and its benefits and how to maintain it.

My velvet sofa and velvet chairs are easy to vacuum with the upholstery attachment on my vacuum cleaner. This helps get rid of the hair and dust that can build up in the soft fibers. This is something I do about once every two weeks. It is easy to clean food spillages on my dining room chairs. I just use a soft, damp cloth to wipe them away. I use elbow grease and don’t use any cleaner. My velvet chairs are much easier to clean than the linen-like fabric dining chairs that I used in our breakfast nook.
